In addition to the general admission requirements for the Graduate College and the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, international applicants must also meet the following requirements.
English Proficiency
These are general minimum requirements for international admission to the Graduate College. International applicants who do not meet the requirements for a waiver (see below) are required to submit English proficiency scores.
Minimum requirements include:
- A U.S. bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college of university, or an equivalent degree from another country as determined by the Office of Admissions.
- A minimum grade-point average (GPA) of 3.00/4.00, or the foreign equivalent as determined by the Office of Admissions.

For the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology PhD program, the strongest international applicants will have combined TOEFL scores greater than 100, IELTS scores greater than 7 with no subscore less than 6.5, or DuoLingo scores greater than 120.
Financial Statement Requirement
Please review the Graduate College requirement for a financial statement from international applicants admitted to our program. International applicants who receive and accept an offer of admission may use the following information for this requirement:
- Tuition and applicable fees are paid by the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology department.
- A stipend is provided to cover living expenses. For fiscal year 2024-2025, the stipend for our program students is $34,500/year.
- The department contributes a significant portion of health and dental insurance premiums cost (depending on the plan).
