A "fellowship" is generally a short-term opportunity (few months to several years) where you focus on professional development and it is sponsored by an organization.

Before you arrive on campus, the Department of Biochemistry enhances recruitment packages for our most accomplished new PhD students. They will receive the award if they accept our offer.

Alfred P. Sloan Federation University Center for Exemplary Mentoring (UCEM)

  • The UI UCEM provides highly competitive scholarships and professional development funds that supplement the full support (RA, TA, etc.) provided to students during their doctoral studies. As per Sloan Foundation guidelines all Sloan Scholars must be US Citizens belonging to at least one of the following groups: African American, Hispanic/Latino, Native American, or Alaskan Native.

In addition to the University wide fellowships, the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology offers many awards to our graduate students. 

 

National Fellowships

In addition to the University-wide fellowships, students are encouraged to apply for national fellowships.  Launching your search for graduate student funding can feel overwhelming. UI Grad Success staff provide funding consultations and proposal reviews. Students should book an appointment online.

Award recipients, who are successful in obtaining a competitive fellowship, may be eligible for a stipend supplement via the Supplement for External Fellowship Program and the Fellowship Incentive Program.
