Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis is now accepting applications for their Summer Undergraduate Research Group Experience (SURGE) program, which will be offered during the summer of 2026 in the Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biophysics (BMB). This will be an eight-week research program focused in the areas of Molecular Biochemistry and Biophysics. Research areas in this department range from single-molecule spectroscopy to molecular simulations to mitochondrial biochemistry. As well as conducting research, students will also attend workshops that cover various important areas in science, including how to design experiments, how to read papers, scientific communication, and guidance on graduate school applications.
To be eligible for the program, undergraduate applicants must be graduating between Fall 2026 and Summer 2027 with limited research experience and looking forward to graduate school post-undergrad. They strongly encourage applicants from diverse backgrounds to apply, and international students with a valid visa from their host institution are welcome to apply as well.
Round-trip travel to Saint Louis, housing, local travel, and a $6000 stipend will be provided. Students must be fully available for the eight-week program duration: Thursday, May 28th through Sunday, July 26th, 2026.
Applications are due by Friday, January 23rd, 2026.
